B.F. Skinner, a major figure in behaviorism, proposed that behavior is primarily shaped by environmental factors, especially through reinforcement and punishment. Skinner’s operant conditioning model demonstrated that consequences following behaviors determine the likelihood of those behaviors being repeated.

In Gestalt therapy, developed by Fritz Perls, unexpressed emotions such as rage, hatred, or grief are referred to as unfinished business. These unresolved feelings persist and interfere with present functioning until they are acknowledged and worked through.

Low-context cultures rely heavily on the explicit verbal content of messages. Communication is direct, clear, and detailed. In contrast, high-context cultures depend more on nonverbal cues and shared understandings. “Low-context cultures rely on spoken or written words to convey meaning, as opposed to high-context cultures which use more nonverbal communication.”

Treating all clients exactly the same, without consideration for their unique cultural backgrounds, is not culturally competent and is considered unethical according to professional codes of ethics. Counselors are ethically bound to provide culturally responsive services. “A universal or color-blind approach fails to recognize individual and cultural differences, and such practice is considered unethical.”

According to Erik Erikson's psychosocial stages of development, the initiative vs. guilt stage occurs during the preschool years (ages 3–6). During this stage, children assert themselves more frequently through directing play and other social interaction. Learning through play, exploration, and engaging in activities such as building puzzles or cooking fits this stage. Children develop initiative when encouraged and supported in their efforts; if not, they may develop guilt over their needs and desires.

Parametric statistics require that the data in the population from which samples are drawn are normally distributed. Other assumptions may include interval or ratio level measurement and homogeneity of variance, but the normality assumption is central.

A here-and-now focus in group counseling encourages members to interact directly with one another about their present experiences in the group. Counselors guide members to talk to, rather than about, each other, fostering authentic communication, immediacy, and stronger group cohesion. “Here-and-now group leadership encourages members to address each other directly to process feelings and reactions in the present moment.”

Kohlberg’s post-conventional level includes abstract reasoning about universal ethical principles and social contracts, where moral decisions are made based on internalized principles rather than external authority.

Encouraging group members to reveal their feelings of lack of trust to each other is an effective way for a group leader to promote openness and honesty. This process can foster authentic communication, address concerns directly, and gradually build trust. Artificially requiring only positive feedback does not lead to genuine trust.

The correlation coefficient quantifies the degree and direction (positive or negative) of a linear relationship between two continuous variables. Values range from -1 to +1.
