Collector Groups in vRealize Operations are used to distribute the load of monitored objects across different remote collectors. This helps balance the workload and ensures that no single collector becomes overwhelmed. By distributing the monitoring tasks, Collector Groups improve performance, scalability, and overall efficiency in large environments.

Number of Objects

vRealize Operations sizing is fundamentally driven by how many infrastructure and application objects (VMs, hosts, datastores, etc.) are being monitored - each additional object consumes CPU, memory, and storage resources on the cluster.

Number of Agents

When using Application Remote Collectors, the total count of agents (for OS and application ‑ level metrics) per node directly affects capacity planning, as each agent connection incurs processing and storage overhead.

Number of Metrics

The volume of distinct metrics collected (across all adapters and agents) determines database size and I/O load; sizing guidelines specify maximum collected ‑ metric counts per node to ensure performance.

Log masking in vRealize Log Insight is applied to logs after the configuration has been created and enabled. It will only affect logs that are ingested after the log masking is activated, meaning that historical logs already ingested before the mask configuration will not be affected.

Remote Collector: These nodes can use DHCP to obtain their IP addresses, which is useful in environments where static IPs are not preferred for non-primary infrastructure.

Data Node: Data nodes can also be configured with DHCP, simplifying IP management in large deployments.

The most performant disk format for vRealize Log Insight is Thick Provision Eager Zeroed. This format provides better performance because the entire disk is allocated at the time of creation and is immediately zeroed out, which eliminates the overhead of allocating space during runtime and ensures faster read/write operations.

vRealize Log Insight supports the deployment of multi-node clusters across multiple data centers for high availability and scalability. The architecture with three nodes in each of two separate data centers ensures fault tolerance and load balancing. The six-node cluster can operate across the two datacenters and provides a resilient and distributed logging solution.

Before completing the deployment of vRealize Operations through vRSLCM, an authentication provider must be registered. This step ensures that users can authenticate using appropriate credentials, which is especially important when VMware Identity Manager is already configured. Without a registered authentication provider, users would not be able to access the environment or perform necessary tasks.

To meet the requirement of consuming minimal cluster compute resources while also being resilient against a single node failure, deploying vRealize Operations as a cluster and enabling High Availability (HA) is the best option.

To recover unused allocated compute resources quickly from development VMs in a cluster, the best approach is to use the Rightsize action while ensuring that Production virtual machines are excluded from the process. By excluding production VMs, the administrator can focus on development VMs (those with "dev" in their name) and adjust their resource allocations without affecting critical production systems.
